Lunch staples - Phulkas and Indian hummus/ Nut Butter

Ash's teacher tells me, almost apologetically, he comes only at 8.45 everyday, school starts by 8.30 could I please come a little earlier.  Immediately on the defensive, I complain how difficult it is to get Ashu up.  She says he claims to wake up at 6.00!  Well, he is fast asleep by 6.25 again :)  She then says, she knows how hard it is to make ash do anything but to please try.  I relate the censored conversation to Ash and he says I am the bottle neck.  (Ashu said "You are the bottle cock", a year ago,  the first time he tried to use the phrase ;) I owned up to my delays.  So, now, if Lunch is NOT packed by 8.15, I have to go later to drop it off.  Net consequence?  I make an extra trip to school and S. doesn't eat breakfast. I have sworn to  plan my meal the previous night, not follow any whim at 6.00 AM. do most of the prep work the previous night get up early Well getting up early is hard most mondays and off late I ha...

Pasta with Tomato Nuts Pesto

My favourite blog is Debbie's smitten kitchen . Not just because her kid is around ash's age and shares a chubby look (my first born has a refugee look). Not just because always come away with something whenever I swing by her blog - a recipe, an idea, a joke, a link....  Never a wasted click. Not just because she loves cooking, cannot leave well enough alone or her inability to follow a recipe. But because, I am firmly convinced we will get along famously.  we have absolutely nothing in common. still. I am sure. My favourite feature in her blog is the archive display for each new recipe - unwilling to try today's recipe? Maybe the one from 1 / 2/ 3/4 years ago will fit or at least show you a path... One always does!  Today's was a complicated yeasted challah.  I have never had much look with breads, and I have so much work to do, it was a def no go; then the linguine with almond tomato pesto caught my eye.  Lunch! In 30 minutes. My changes were broug...

Idli Panzanella

Nearly every Saturday breakfast is at Adyar Sangeetha.  We seem to eat the same things we eat at home (though not all on the same day), ash ildi, gau poori., s. dosa and me something purportedly healthy - ragi dosa, cholam dosa etc...  (with the level of oil they use, fat chance).  They don't make better puris or idlis than I do, but they make an awesome coconut chutney.  Every weekend I try to fight for breakfast at home, I mostly fail.  Today was a wonderful exception.  I had 5 - 6 idlis left over from yesterday, a small bowl of cooked Rajma, spring onions, Roma tomatoes and green capsicum.  I decided to make a new version of panzanella.  Took all of 30 minutes! Idli Panzanella Pan 1 5 - 8 idlis cubed 1 cup cooked rajma 1 green chili 1 tbsp peanut oil 1 tsp caraway seeds or anise Grill or Phulka Tava (used to finish off rotis) 2 bell peppers, washed, dried and rubbed with a teaspoon of oil (green or red or yellow) 2 roma t...
